BT BROADBAND PROBLEMS - HAD
ANY? - From Andy Shuttleworth
Dear Sir,
Down the road in
Winterbourne Stoke we are having terrible problems with our broadband
connections to the Shrewton BT exchange - and I wondered if any of your readers
in Shrewton are experiencing similar effects?
What happens is this. Every night between midnight and 3:00am, there is a
massive spike of interference (Random Electronic Impulse Noise or REIN) that
causes broadband routers to reset themselves. There are also spikes every four
hours or so during the day, but these don't cause the same effect as often.
What happens next is that the equipment in the Shrewton exchange (called RAMBo) detects the problem and believes it is your router struggling to keep the connection and reduces the maximum speed your line can operate at. This happens every night until your speed drops to a level (135kbps) where it simply can't drop any lower.
Worse still, your router may tell you it is connecting at a speed that is faster than it actually is. The only way you can be certain is to check what speed the router says and then run a test such as the one at:
http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/
or better still, especially if you are a BTBroadband Customer, the test at:
If it affects anyone in Shrewton, it is likely to be those closest to Winterbourne Stoke - but it may be more widespread than that.
If any of your readers have this problem, I would like to hear from them and can offer some advice as to how to proceed. I would also love to hear from anyone who can suggest any likely causes!
They can contact me at: sinjar05-wstoke@yahoo.co.uk
Regards
Andy Shuttleworth

SHREWTON OIL SHEIKS - From Mike Badham-Thornhill
Dear Shrewton Resident,
1. Please excuse this unsolicited letter.
2. If you do not use Domestic Fuel Oil then please do not read any further.
3. I asked my current oil supplier, Total Butler, the current rate which is 54.9 pence per litre (ppl) plus VAT @ 5% for 1000ltrs. I then asked what the price would be if we bought in bulk and was quoted 52.9ppl plus VAT if we bought 10,000ltrs. This is a saving of £20 on 1000ltrs. However, we would have to have the oil delivered on the same day, same load. Please note that the price is constantly changing but the discount will be about the same.
4. I would be happy to coordinate a group and purchase in bulk. If Total Butler are your current supplier then the cost would go on your account. If you use a different supplier then Total Butler would require payment on delivery for the first delivery.
5. If you are interested then perhaps you could let me know when, approximately, you would like delivery and how much. The minimum quantity would need to be 500ltrs I think, but I expect smaller quantities would be possible. Please also let me have your name and address so that I can advise Total Butler. Email is fine.
6. If we can buy more than 10,000ltrs then we may be able to negotiate a bigger discount.
7. I will. Of course, let you know how I get on and any planned delivery dates.
Yours sincerely,
Mike Badham-Thornhill
