BACKGROUND:
Driven by a looming
government deadline, councils
around the country must submit their recommended high-level regional housing development plans to
central government. South Wilts district must submit a plan that shows how it
will accommodate an additional 12,400 homes over the next several years.
15 sites in Shrewton and 1 in Orcheston have been put forward by landowners as possible sites for new housing (see below for more details). The planning authority has taken initial feedback from the general public and parish councils on the suitability of the candidate sites. South Wilts planners will then take a view on which sites they believe may be viable. They will then report back to central government on the levels of new housing they may be able to sustain.
If central government approves
South Wiltshire's overall plan, then
the local planning authority will start entertaining detailed planning proposals
late in 2008 or
into 2009 (there seems to be some flexibility on this timetable). When those
detailed planning permission applications are made, local residents can then
respond with detailed objections and comments on the specific proposals.
The Council say that - even though the official deadline is now passed - such
has been the level of interest and concern in this matter that they will still
take comments for a while longer (see below for contact addresses for comments). Click

HOW TO SEND COMMENTS AND RESPONSES: Comments should relate to the
effect on aspects such as sustainability (reasonable access to services,
education, employment, shopping etc), infrastructure, traffic, safety
issues, amenity and access. Click
HERE for some sample comments sent in by readers of this website.
In each response you must quote the planning
proposal reference number to which the comment relates (for example "Site
Reference 134: Land At Tanners Lane, Shrewton)". Some useful additional guidelines for
commenting on planning proposals can be found at
http://www.planningaid.rtpi.org.uk/SITE/UPLOAD/DOCUMENT/The%20Planning%20Pack/Sheet_9_Development_Control_-_commenting_on_planning_applications.pdf
as you will see from reading that document, successful objections most often
reference issues such as safety and amenity and pressure on local
infrastructure, rather than loss of view or light pollution.
Responses should be sent to Salisbury
