Thursday the 24 May 2017 saw villagers and Appleford School pupils having an history lesson in one of the most harrowing campaigns of WW1 – Gallipoli.
Grateful thanks were expressed Appleford School for providing the venue at no charge together with our local Co-Op supplying the light refreshments for the evening. The result of this was a donation to the Shrewton Shines activities of £143.50, this figure consisted of donations to the raffle and entrance fees. There was also a Q &A Discussion with the pupils from Appleford asking most of questions, which were of interest to all; especially as WW1 is a subject within their forthcoming GCSE examinations. We all of the Shrewton Shines committee wish them well in their endeavours.
The presentation by Col. Christopher Newbould CBE, was again extremely interesting and informative highlighting the Gallipoli campaign with many interesting facts and figures, together with some songs from the era.
The aim of the fund raising event is to produce a memorial book showing a brief narrative of each soldier who left our villages to go to war and never to return. The book will include all those in the Benefice of Salisbury Plain. It is proposed to have the books ready for display in September 2018, with the Shrewton Parish book on display in the Primary School, at the beginning of the Autumn Term 2018 with it being paraded through the High Street on Remembrance Sunday 2018 where it will be presented to Shrewton Church – it is also proposed to present memorial books to other villages within the benefice.
