Concerns have been raised about traders knocking on peoples’ doors offering to do work that has not been previously requested by the householder or trying to sell items (usually low quality at inflated prices). They may say that they are a reformed criminal trying to mend their ways or produce a card which states that they are deaf and dumb (these doorstep sellers are often known as ‘Nottingham Knockers’ – from where the scam originated).
If you are faced with a trader who knocks at your door offering to do work that you have not previously requested you are fully entitled to ask them to go away and leave you alone. If they leave but you feel they may pose a problem to others (such as vulnerable neighbours) you can ring Wiltshire Police on 101 to report their presence in the area. If they refuse to leave or try and intimidate you ring 999 and ask for the police.
