If you’ve been wondering why the village suddenly resembles a cross between the M25 and an obstacle course… you’re not alone.
Shrewton.com has only just received the official information from the Parish Council Clerk… by which time the roadworks had already started, traffic was backing up nicely, and the Community WhatsApp group had clocked up well over 150 messages. At this rate, WhatsApp’s servers were in more danger than the sewer pipes.
So, for anyone who’s spent today asking, “What’s going on?” – here’s the official explanation…
Apparently, Wessex Water has discovered faults in parts of the village sewer network and is investing nearly Β£100,000 to repair more than 530 metres of sewer.
It’s all very sensible stuff. The work helps prevent sewer collapses, stops foul water escaping, reduces flooding and helps protect our rivers. Nobody wants the village making the national news for the wrong sort of overflow.
Most of the work will be carried out using modern ‘no-dig’ technology, which sounds impressive… although judging by today’s traffic, plenty of us still found ourselves in a hole.
π¦ Traffic Management
π Monday 3 β Friday 21 August
High Street (B3086)
- The southern end of the High Street will be closed outside the Co-op while excavation works take place.
- The Co-op will remain open as normal, so you can still nip in for milk, bread… and the thing you forgot to buy yesterday.
- Please follow the signed diversion.
π Monday 10 β Friday 14 August
Maddington Street
- Rolling multi-way traffic lights will be in place between the junction of the B390 and Maddington/Priory Close.
- Perfect if you’ve always wanted a few extra minutes to admire the village scenery.
π Monday 10 β Friday 14 August
Tanners Lane
- Give-and-take traffic management outside The Brambles to allow Wessex Water vehicles to park.
- Yes… it’s another set of temporary lights. Deep breaths, everyone.
π Monday 10 August
Elston Lane
- A one-day road closure outside Elston Lodge.
- Resident access will be maintained via a diversion through Orcheston and the A360.
π Monday 17 β Friday 21 August
Tanners Lane
- Closed to through traffic between No. 1 Tanners Lane and Bourne House.
- Resident access will still be maintained via a local diversion.
π§ What to Expect
- Resident access will be maintained wherever possible, although there may be occasional delays.
- There will inevitably be some noise, but Wessex Water says every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum.
- Your water and sewerage services should continue as normal unless you’re contacted directly.
Hopefully this puts all the official information in one place.
Judging by the Community WhatsApp group, everyone already knows about the roadworks… they’re just comparing queues, debating the best diversion, and calculating exactly how many minutes of their lives have been lost sitting at temporary traffic lights.
Let’s hope the work is completed quickly, the roads reopen as planned, and the village can find something new to collectively moan about. It wouldn’t be Shrewton otherwise! π
