October 2015, Village Cleanup Day

October 2015Cleanup1Around 50 people, with ages ranging from 6 to 70+ joined the latest Village Cleanup day arranged by Shrewton & District WI in conjunction with the Parish Council.
What a team they proved to be!
Within just a couple of hours, the regular tasks of picking litter from streets, paths and stream were completed, along with pruning of overgrown shrubs. But the main focus of this session was to clear the kerb edges and footpaths of weeds and debris that had accumulated over recent months, along with ensuring that the drainage pipes along the High Street were unblocked.
October 2015Cleanup2What a difference we made! Over 50 bags were filled with rubbish, to be removed by Wiltshire County Council, who supported the event by providing materials.
The amazing thing was that, inspite of the hard work, dust and sweat, most people seemed to enjoy themselves! The feeling of community spirit was very impressive – but that’s not surprising in Shrewton, is it?
The support of Bradley at Shrewton Coop (in the form of provisions for hot drinks and bacon butties) was much appreciated, with refreshments provided at Maddington Church Rooms afterwards.
October 2015Cleanup3Shrewton Guides and pupils from Appleford School also supported the event, which bodes well for the future involvement of these young people in community matters.
This year, for the first time, an Information Unit from the Environment Agency was on site to provide guidance to locals in relation to flood prevention and management.
On behalf of the WI, I would like to thank all involved – a great effort!
What next? Did I hear someone say?
