In 2014 the St Mary’s Church Allotments in Upper Backway underwent a transformation from being overgrown and sadly neglected, to tended and nurtured plots producing vegetables, soft fruit and flowers.
There is a real community atmosphere as plot holders have got to know each other. Plot holders vary from experienced gardeners to novices; the common denominator is the desire to produce their own vegetables, and a willingness to put in some hard work for the satisfaction of harvesting the produce. Keeping an allotment requires time and a lot of hard work. The vagaries of the British weather can also put paid to crops but with dedication much can be achieved. This year a number of plots have been sub-divided to allow newcomers to try a small area of ground first.
